Although it feels almost sacregilious to take a track out of “ISAM” and release it as a single, we’re going to have a go.

The Surge EP will be out on Ninja Tune on July 4.

“Surge” is one of the short, sweet, standout moments of a remarkable record. Beautiful and mournful, it sounds a little like two lovers being strafed with dark matter. As Tobin explains, “Surge isn't a story or anything, but in the interests of painting a picture it could be about trying to hold the reins on blasts of electrical energy or some such thing - trying to guide it while avoiding getting turned to powder. I think of Tesla with his mad machines doing his best to channel overpowering natural forces into something he can control and utilise.”

First up on the remix tip is none other than… Amon Tobin himself, who in his more Two Fingers guise, ups the beats and the sub-bass for a satisfyingly heavy experience. Labelmate Emika, a long-time admirer of Amon’s work, reinvents the tune as a fragile, almost churchlike experience, her Czech singing delicate but strangely powerful.

16bit take up the last place on the EP turning in a raw, bass-heavy dubstepper which takes us a long way from where we started but in a very satisfying way!

Not only have we created 4000 limited-edition copies of the CD/Hardback book worldwide in celebration of the physical release of Amon Tobin's ISAM, but Amon and Ninja Tune also worked with some of the best indie stores in the US for a competition.

Fifty (50) select indie record stores across the United States currently have copies of the ISAM vinyl double LP autographed by Amon himself. The stores are running competitions through their social media, so make sure to check the shops' Facebook and Twitter accounts to find out how to win (We are also posting through @amontobinHQ, @ninjatunehq and, of course!). It might just be as easy as finding it in the record racks, though! These copies are now available worldwide, as well as ISAM CDs, 2LPs, and limited edition art book. Amon Tobin creates aural treasures each time he touches studio equipment. He breathes vitality into a stagnant genre with each drum hit. He rejuvenates the pallid genre of electronica every time he permits the world to glance through the twisted digital window of his music." Pitchfork

May 23rd sees the release of the seventh record by electronic pioneer Amon Tobin. Entitled 'ISAM', it revolves around the use of invented instruments and synthesising natural sounds.

“It’s by far the most exciting development in my personal quest for some control over nature,” Tobin explains. “Anything from a grain of found sound to my own voice can be transformed into something new.”

The album is Tobin's most thrilling, experimental and yet simultaneously accessible work to date; a musical statement that despite being a new direction, is a logical step from his previous releases.

The album campaign will be accompanied by an all new, highly ambitious, breathtaking live show at the Camden Roundhouse on 17th June. For this one off set of shows, Tobin will be stepping away from previous DJ centric performances, and instead will be providing a large scale live audio/visual experience to select cities around the world. Developing the show alongside Amon is the award winning, internationally published V Squared Labs' founder Vello. His impressive roster includes Jay- Z, Beyonce, Korn and Red Hot Chilli Peppers amongst others. Building the set is Alex Lazarus (Vita Motus), who has been on the production crew at Coachella Festival for eleven years, and has worked with everyone from Flying Lotus, Boys Noize, and Massive Attack, to Lady Gaga, Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre.

The show will feature a stunning 25' x 14' x 8' multi-dimensional/ shape shifting 3-D art installation surrounding Tobin and enveloping him and the audience in a beyond 3-D experience. A fantastic visual journey to accompany his music.

It will be a visual onslaught - narrative, subtle and bombastic - using projection mapping, generative/audio reactive real time and pre-rendered elements combined with custom software to control the show. The visual elements will be synched to Tobin's music to make a large scale next level HD experience.

For the first time in Amon Tobin's career he'll be able to perform a show based around the concept of the album and deliver a truly unique visual experience to go along with his renowned audio experiences.

Tickets for the Roundhouse show can be bought here...

A few days ago, we at AmonTobinHQ invited questions about the new ISAM album.

Thank you to everyone who posted questions -- and special thanks to everyone who has already pre-ordered the album!

The following questions were grabbed from the Facebook page and from Twitter.

Q: what part of the production process did you spend the most time on with this project?

I did spend allot of time learning new techniques in sound and instrument design. I spent about six months learning new software and hardware then the same amount of time adapting them to my needs.

Q: What tune/s are you most satisfied with?

I love all my children : )

Q: What part of the creative process did you enjoy the most? hate, if any?

I love'd learning new things. being surprised by it all.

Q:were you working on any other side projects we haven't heard about while doing this one? and if so, do you feel that had an influence to this album in some way?

this is the only long term thing I've been working on for the last couple of years. I put aside pretty much all sound track work and shows.. my extensive commitments to charity work, spiritual consultation to the stars and fighting crime. basically anything that would have been sensible or unselfish to do and instead dedicated myself completely to making this record.

Q: what everyone wants to know, what can we expect?

a labor of love made without a shred of a care for much else.

Q:Is this album an extension of Foley Room, or totally different?

in many ways it's a logical step from sampling to foley/field recording to now the synthesis of field recordings incorporating acoustic modeling and multisampling techniques amongst other things.

Q:What gear / interesting technology / secret sauce went into making the record? Was every sound sampled?

the sauce is secret I'm afraid because much of the software and instrument build techniques I've either developed myself or adapted specifically for my own needs. so perhaps less secret than irrelevant to anyone else. in any case it's safe to say there are no samples on this record.

Q:Track N°5 (Lost & Found) is the same version of the track on Ninja Tune XX ? If answer is yes, we have a little way to ISAM. Lost & found is a very good track i love it !

thanks yes it is. Q :Amon's version of Sunhammer might have been on it. Is there plans to release this?

this is planned for the two fingers album.

Q: What do you use to produce your tracks ? do you know how I could buy the machine that you used for the Noisia remix (or a similar one)?

if you are talking about the video on my site, the controller surface is called a continuum and is made by haaken. the sound in the clip that was used for the noisia remix is something I built though and isn't generated by the continuum.

Q: can u haev sex to it,or does it icrease the dangers of suddenly becomeing naked?

you should do a test with a control group in a neutral environment and report back.

Q: Not really a question. Just to say that I grew up on your music. It got me thorough all the times in school and I thank you. I will always be a supporter of your music.

thankyou very much

Q: -Is there some of the old fashioned jazz influence that seeps out of the rest of your records? To me, that is your sound.

no. I really get what you mean but back in the 1990's what I was trying to do with that sound was as exiting to me as what I'm trying to do now. to the great majority of people it also met with the same amount of resistance to change from the tried and tested. so what I'm trying to say is I'll never be able to deliver a comfortable familiar sound long as I'm exited about music and it's possibilities.

Q:Oh yea, one last or is the cover art related to the title of the album and music? please explain....

it's a reordering of natural things.. like the music.

Thanks again for asking, for visiting and reading. Comments / linkbacks welcome!

Re-drawing and blurring the lines between psychedelia and sci-fi, between art and entertainment, between sound design and melody, "ISAM" is Amon Tobin's first album since "Foley Room" in 2007. Tobin has created the finest, most intense work of his very considerable career, an extension and refinement of everything he has achieved thus far…

1 Journeyman
2 Piece Of Paper
3 Goto 10
4 Surge
5 Lost & Found
6 Wooden Toy
7 Mass & Spring
8 Calculate
9 Kitty Cat
10 Bedtime Stories
11 Night Swim
12 Dropped From The Sky

Amon Tobin has collaborated with Saatchi Collection artist Tessa Farmer, on an art installation named, "ISAM: Control Over Nature".  It will be open between Thursday 26th May - Sunday 6th June at The Crypt Gallery (below St Pancras Church) in Euston, London.

Some time ago, Amon was approached to contribute several pieces of music for an innovative dance theatre performance titled 'Vollmond (Full Moon)' by the late celebrated German avant-garde dancer and choreographer Pina Bausch. The work was staged at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in Fall 2010 and left audiences absolutely floored.

Renowned German film director Wim Wenders, known for such modern classics as Paris, Texas, Wings of Desire, and Buena Vista Social Club, created a truly breathtaking film paying tribute Ms Bausch's fearless artistic spirit titled Pina. The film features works by the late choreographer interwoven in a visually arresting manner in 3D. An avid supporter of Amon's music, Wenders used several of Amon's tracks as part of the heart-stopping soundtrack for the film.

Pina has its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) in February 2011. Official theatrical release in Germany will be on 2/24/11 with more release dates worldwide to follow.
